Mental Health & Health Care 
​

If elected, the Liberals intend to:

​

  • Deliver permanent funding to participating provinces and territories through the Canada Mental Health Transfer in order to create more “high-quality, accessible, and free” mental health services with an initial investment of $4.5 billion over five years (Liberal Platform, CTV)
     

  • Pledge $500 million over four years to introduce a student-focused mental health fund to decrease wait times by hiring up to 1,200 new mental healthcare counselors at post-secondary institutions, with 10% annually going to Indigenous-governed and operated schools  (CTV)
     

  • Implement a national three-digit mental health crisis and suicide prevention hotline (CTV)
     

  • Work with partners to ensure timely access to perinatal mental health services (Liberal Platform)

 

They’ve also committed to:

  • Increase rural and underserved communities’ access to healthcare (Liberal Platform)
     

  • Provide $400 million over 4 years to build on virtual healthcare services (Liberal Platform)
     

  • Use $6 billion to cut waitlists for treatment and $3.2 billion to hire 7,500 doctors and nurses, with the rest going towards virtual care improvements and rural health care (CBC)

The state of our mental health is connected to what’s going on in the world around us. We can be hugely affected by things like our working conditions, our ability to make rent, intergenerational trauma, or the security of our planet. 

 

Here’s an idea of where the Liberals stand on:

 

>> Climate 

​

  • Cut Canada’s greenhouse gas emissions by 40% to 45% below 2005 levels by 2030 (CBC)
     

  • Ensure the oil and gas sector cuts emissions at the pace required to hit net-zero in 2050, with five-year targets (CBC)
     

  • Ban single-use plastics by 2030 (CBC)

 

>> Housing

​

  • Help renters become homeowners through $1 billion in loans and grants (CTV)
     

  • Help young Canadians afford a down payment faster with a tax-free First Home Savings Account of up to $40,000 (CTV, Liberal Platform)
     

  • Double the first-time home buyers tax credit from $5,000 to $10,000 (CBC)
     

  • Propose a "rent-to-own" program, with $1 billion in new funding for renters in the next five years (CBC)
     

  • Build, preserve or repair 1.4 million homes in the next four years (CBC)
     

  • Ban blind bidding (CBC)
     

  • Ban foreign ownership of new homes for the next two years (CBC)

 

>> Labour 

​

  • Restore one million jobs lost due to the pandemic  (CTV)
     

  • Extend the Canada Recovery Hiring Program to March 31, 2022 (CBC, CTV)
     

  • Pay up to 75% of income and rent expenses for qualifying businesses in the tourism sector between September to May 2022 (CTV)
     

  • Include mental health as a “specific element” of occupational health and safety under the Canada Labour Code (CTV)
     

  • Require federally-regulated employers to take preventative steps to address workplace stress and injury (CTV)
     

  • Extend insurance coverage to support 150,000 jobs in media production due to COVID-19 closures (Platform)

 

>> Indigenous Rights

​

  • Accelerate the implementation of the Federal Pathway to Address Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women, Girls and 2SLGBTQQIA+ People with Indigenous partners, accelerate their work on the 2021 Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women, Girls, and 2SLGBTQQIA+ People National Action Plan and create a standing committee to facilitate and coordinate this work (Liberal Platform)
     

  • Boost funding to on-reserve services, such as education, health and social services (CTV)
     

  • Continue supporting access to clean water for Indigenous communities (CTV)
     

  • Promise  $18 billion over five years to improve the quality of life for people in Indigenous communities through things like education and health care (CBC) 
     

  • Spend an additional $1.4 billion over five years for a mental health and wellness strategy to be developed with Indigenous communities (CBC)
     

  • Build a monument in Ottawa to honour residential school survivors (CBC)

 

>> Students

​

  • Continue providing the $6,000 Canada Student Grant for two more years (CTV)
     

  • Spend $721-million to help students find employment (CTV)
     

  • Change the Repayment Assistance Program so that graduates won’t have to start repaying loans until they make at least $40,000 (CTV)
